The Combe Martin Village History Project (CMVHP) is committed to ensuring that this website is accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities.

CMVHP is designed to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) AA contrast standards, with clear typography and readable layouts across all devices.

Our switchable contrast mode improves visibility for users with low vision, or those browsing in bright light. Part of our commitment to inclusive access, it's available on every page footer.

The mode persists across the website, tabs, and sessions, unless the user clears site data or uses incognito mode.

Our contrast mode doesn’t require cookies or server-side storage—which means it’s privacy-friendly and compliant.

Visitors who prefer enhanced contrast or alternative colour schemes can adjust their display settings using built-in tools on their device or browser.

These include high-contrast modes, dark themes, and colour filters available on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and most modern browsers.

Our nonprofit social project team is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where everyone is valued and respected.

Our Website Structure 

• Clear Headings and Sections: The content is divided into distinct sections with clear headings, making it easy for users to locate specific information.

• Our Speed-reader instantly lets visitors read and listen to a summary of our history content. It uses browsers’ built-in Web Speech API, specifically the speech synthesis interface. It might not work on all browsers or devices.

• Some older browsers or less common mobile browsers (for example, certain WebView implementations or browsers on very old devices) might not support SpeechSynthesis at all.

• Navigation Links: A footer menu provides quick access to various resources and navigation links, enhancing user flow throughout the site.

• Large Font and Formatting: The use of large fonts and well-formatted paragraphs aids readability, which is particularly beneficial for users with visual impairments.

Auto-Translate

Several modern web browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari, have built-in auto-translate features for websites. Microsoft Edge can be used to translate web pages.

Google Translate and Microsoft Translator can translate website content into several languages. Other translation websites and tools are available. 

In Chrome, users can select a different language to translate to by:

• Clicking the three vertical dots (top right of Chrome) and selecting Translate.

• Selecting Choose another language, then picking the preferred language from the list and clicking Translate.

Windows Accessibility Features

Accessibility shortcuts can help you use your PC with a keyboard or assistive device. Keyboard shortcuts are keys, or combinations of keys, that provide alternative ways to perform tasks typically done with a mouse.

Microsoft Accessibility tools can set up Windows to fit your needs for  neurodiversity, Vision and Hearing.

Android Accessibility

The Android Accessibility page emphasises inclusive design with features for users with disabilities, including tools for vision, audio notifications, and mobility assistance.

Accessibility Tools and Artificial Intelligence

Modern browsers offer A.I. capabilities, and built-in accessibility features designed to help you navigate the web in a way that best fits your needs. Assistive Technologies are also available.

Tools include screen readers for Windows and MacOS, such as NV Access. Web browsers have accessibility tools and adjustable reading modes. Sometimes embedded from a third-party source, these tools are available for Android.

Screen readers embedded in browsers make web content more accessible, especially for those who prefer or need customisable auditory content. Microsoft Edge browser offers 'Read Aloud' via Settings, activated by keyboard shortcuts.

Browser Accessibility Features

Microsoft Edge and Copilot offer a range of accessibility features to enhance user experience. Edge includes tools like Immersive Reader for simplifying webpage layouts, Read Aloud for auditory content, colour filters for visual impairments, and keyboard shortcuts for easier navigation.

Modern browsers offer Accessibility extensions through the Chrome web store.

Microsoft Copilot provides A.I. powered assistance. This allows users to interact through voice commands, receive personalized recommendations, and access real-time transcription, making it easier to navigate and interact with content.

Speech recognition is available for hands-free control. And together, all of these features improve web accessibility for users with various disabilities.

Screen Readers as Audiobook Creators

Screen readers can also conveniently turn web pages into audio books. It's a great way to experience articles in an immersive audio experience. This ensures that everyone can access information regardless of their reading abilities.

Web Accessibility with Voice Navigation

Use spoken commands to interact with websites and applications. Screen readers such as JAWS and NVDA now include voice navigation capabilities.

Users can give voice commands to navigate web pages, read content, and interact with elements.

Accessibility Options in Browser Settings

In modern web browsers, users have the ability to zoom in on pages, which allows for the enlargement of images and text. This feature enhances visibility and makes content easier to read.

Adjusting page contrast colours through browser settings can make website content easier to read, and navigate. These adjustments are recommended for users with visual impairments or other accessibility needs.

Some browsers, like Microsoft Edge, include voice options. To access them, click the three-dot menu (⋯) in the top-right corner and look for 'Read Aloud' or other voice-related settings.

Live caption services can create and translate captions for various languages. They assist everyone, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing, in comprehending audio more effectively by offering automatic transcription.

Accessibility extensions are available through settings in many web browsers.

Translation Options:

Web browsers don't automatically translate web pages for you. They can detect the language of a page, but you need to tell the browser to translate it, if you want to read web pages in a different language.

When translation options are turned on in browser settings, users may be prompted to have foreign language content translated to their preferred language.

Ongoing Improvements to Accessibility

We are committed to ensuring that our geological data is accessible to the widest possible audience. We are currently undergoing a phased update to this website, to enhance Screen Reader Compatibility, improve Keyboard Navigation, and integrate comprehensive ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) labels.
