Combe Martin's Community Hub for Over a Century 

Combe Martin Village Hall is a historic landmark. On December 2, 1909, the North Devon Journal announced the building of the new Drill Hall on High Street, in the centre of the village.

Key Highlights of the Village Hall Calendar:

• The Monthly Farmer's Market & Craft Fair: This is the hall's signature recurring event, typically held on the third Saturday of every month. It features an extensive lineup of local stallholders offering regional produce, artisan crafts, and goods from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Upcoming dates explicitly listed for the latter half of 2026 include:

  • July 18th, August 15th, September 19th, October 21st, November 21st, and December 12th.

• Weekly Clubs & Youth Activities: The hall plays host to foundational community groups during school term times, including:

  • Kids Friday Youth Club: For ages 8–16, providing a weekly social space.

  • Youth Organizations: Term-time slots for Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and Rangers.

  • Martial Arts: Weekly Tuesday Judo classes broken down by age groups (from 5-year-olds to Seniors/Adults).

• Adult & Senior Recreation:

  • Badminton: Gentle exercise sessions open to adults on Mondays (10 am–12 pm, pay-on-the-day) and structured Thursday evening sessions for both kids and adults.

  • Indoor Bowls: A highly popular seasonal activity running on Sundays and Mondays (2 pm–5 pm) starting back up in the autumn.

Regular youth clubs, sports, parties, and monthly farmers' markets are all held here. The ever-popular holiday 'Books and Jeans Sale' runs during holiday and festive periods. 

Bingo, shows, wedding parties and functions are all held at the Village Hall.

Combe Martin's Premier Community and Social Hub

For over a century, the Village Hall has hosted countless local functions, dances, shows and fairs, stage plays and markets. 

Originally used by the 1/6th Battalion Devonshire Regiment territorial force in World War 1, the hall is still a vital community asset along with Combe Martin's Community Shop, Combe Martin Museum, and our historic Combe Martin Community Centre.

The Diverse History of the Old Drill Hall

Originally built for 6th Battalion (TF), Devonshire Regiment (G Company) including kitchen: in its early life this venue held boxing matches, picture shows, local council and committee meetings.

During the early twentieth-century, local volunteer soldiers competed to win 'silver spoons'. Pageants, garden shows and even operettas were also held here.

The British Newspaper Archive lists countless events at the Old Drill Hall throughout the 20th century. At Barnstaple Rural District Council on 21 March, 1912, Dr. Manning applied for a license for stage plays at the Drill Hall.

Reported in The North Devon Journal on 6 May 1915, the Belgian Relief Committee met here. On March 9, 1925, the Drill Hall hosted a miniature shooting match between Barnstaple and Combe Martin.

In April 1931, Messrs. Sanders and Son, Barnstaple, conducted a successful sale of accommodation, lands and building sites at the Drill Hall. Dances, meetings and concerts were held at this venue throughout World War II.

This brief resume exemplifies the Drill Hall/Village Hall's long history as a vital community hub, going from strength to strength to a community hub and registered charity.
